Rate of Return Programs

Thoroughbred auctions are the quintessential place to absorb an important aspect of the Thoroughbred marketplace. Dapple Bloodstock offers a unique way to enjoy this market through participation in programs known as pinhooking. This is a strategy in which the client invests in bloodstock for the sole purpose of selling it for profit at a later date. The primary Thoroughbred auctions take place seasonally at a variety of locations, providing an owner the perfect opportunity for travel and entertainment. This, combined with the action of watching your Thoroughbred go on the block and celebrating the fall of the hammer, is a real-life learning experience.

The most common pinhooking ventures are weanling-to-yearling partnerships, and yearling to two-year-old partnerships. Statistically speaking, middle to upper range purchases have greater chances for success, so why not come on board with a partnership operation based in the heart of Kentucky, and get more horses for your money.

Our Pinhooking ventures are one to two year rate of return strategies looking for profit.  Dapple Stud in Bourbon County outside Paris, Kentucky is our base of operations for our mare and yearling programs.  Come see us anytime and enjoy the journey from birth to sales ring.

Current Rate of Return Investment Opportunities

Typically, a Dapple resale partnership will be announced 60 days before the auction process begins, with the units to be sold and paid for within 15 days after the auction. Resale partnerships have a short time line with a definite end date, immediately following the sale of the inventory at specific auction venues. This is an excellent opportunity for a newcomer to learn very quickly the Thoroughbred auction atmosphere.
Annually we provide our client base with two opportunities to participate with us in pinhooking ventures. The first is a yearling to two year-old venture in conjunction with Wavertree Stable in Ocala which forms in July each year.  This is followed by the Dapple Weanling pinhook, formed each October, in which the horses winter at Dapple Stud in Kentucky.

Opportunities to participate will come from LLCs formed just prior to purchasing weanlings or yearlings for resale each year. These are all ventures designed for return on investment and have a higher unit cost ($50,000 - $100,000); the entertainment/educational aspect of these programs can be very rewarding as well, as the owners are encouraged to visit the horses at will and attend all auctions.

Some of the benefits of Pinhooking with Dapple include:

  • Affordable ownership and excellent diversification for risk sharing.
  • Built in expense allowances to avoid cash calls during the partnership's existence.
  • Quarterly financial reporting and annual K-1 preparation at no additional expense to investors.
  • Ongoing and direct access to boarding farms, broodmares and foals
  • Dapple Bloodstock principals participate in all partnerships.

Dapple Weanlings 2008, LLC

Expand Weanlings selected by Mike Akers and team, wintered at Dapple Stud, prepared for the yearling markets of 2009. Congratulations: The 2008 Slew Smarts - Birdstone colt at Fasig Tipton Kentucky's July Yearlings sale where the well formed colt set the session topper for Monday, July 20, 2009.  One of the early supporters of Gainesway's Birdstone, Mike purchased the colt as a $37,000 short yearling in January of 2009 on behalf of this LLC.
As the partnership continued its dispersal throughout September, the LLC still boasts a modest net gain despite the market correction.

Expand Congratulations to the team and the investors for another successful venture.  Welcome to the annual Dapple pinhooking event featuring yearlings purchased in 2007, trained in Ocala by Ciaran and Amy Dunne's Wavertree Stable, and prepped for resale in the spring two year old in training auctions.   The popularity of this program creates a substantial pool of capital from which the team can hand pick well over a dozen athletic individuals for winter training.  Some special business features make this pinhook unique, including management fees based on profit incentives, as well as having a firm cap on the training/sale prep expenses within the company.  Give us a call to take a closer look.

Dapple Weanlings 2006, LLC

Expand Congratulations to the investors of this weanling to yearling pinhook.  A modest return on investment after all expenses, and the prospect of another buying season just around the corner.

The introduction of Dapple Stud created a valuable opportunity to mold a set of 9 mature weanling colts and fillies into yearlings prepared for the prominent late summer 2007 yearling sale venues such as Keeneland's September Yearling Sale.

Recipes for pinhooking success include the following strategic elements:
The foals are sired by marketable stallions, check the link to the stallion page his statistics as you view the photo pages,
The purchases are made from the upper-middle range of the market,
There is safety in numbers when 9 horses are in place,
The horses are all early foals with strong physical make-ups.

Dapple Wavertree 2005, LLC

Expand Congratulations to the Dapple Wavertree 2005 investors!  Getting the sale topper at the first auction of the season and then setting a record for the second highest price paid for a horse at auction this year (only behind the $16million colt), which has been a fabulous experience for the participants of the 2005 pinhook venure.
Thoroughbred Times writer Jeff Lowe reviewed the May Barretts auction with the following comments about Dapple Wavertree's colt:
"The colt was so impressive that there was little doubt in the presale buzz that he would be the sale topper, and Dunne's optimism for a seven-figure price received a boost when he learned that the workout caught the attention of John Ferguson, the chief bloodstock advisor for Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid al Maktoum....The price for the Red Bullet colt, out of Sookloozy, by Avenue of Flags, was the second-highest price for a horse at public auction this year, trailing only the world-record $16-million."
The Thoroughbred Times 3/29/06 morning website news wrote about the Forest Camp colt, the sale topper at OBS in March:
The sale topper was $650,000 and it was $600,000 last year," Ventura said. "There was a lot of activity and it was the same story, the right horses brought a lot of money."
John Ferguson, the primary agent for Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid al Maktoum's global Darley operation, purchased the sale's most expensive horse on a phone bid from his base in England. Ferguson landed the colt by Forest Camp after a spirited bidding battle with Ahmed Zayad that came just after the single-session sale passed its midpoint.
Consigned by Ciaran Dunne's Wavertree Stables Inc., agent for a pinhooking partnership set up by Mike Akers' Dapple Bloodstock, the colt turned in one of the sale's fastest eighth-mile breezes of :10.20 during the video preview under-tack show on January 30. The colt is the second foal out of the unraced Holy Bull mare Holy Love.
"He was just a beautiful horse from the first day we had him," Dunne said. "He was a good yearling, a good horse to break, and a good horse to train. He's been at the top and done everything right every step of the way."

Dapple Weanlings 2004, LLC

Expand This rate of return LLC purchased six great looking weanlings in Fall of 2004 with prices ranging $40,000 to $125,000.  Those weanlings were sold as yearlings and two year olds.

Dapple Wavertree 2004, LLC

Expand Dapple Wavertree 2004, with 17 fillies and colts provided investors with a 23% net return on investment (based on net income, after all expenses), for the period beginning September 2004 through liquidation on June 30, 2005. We are very proud of this return and even more satisfied that the company has been well represented by our two-year-olds in several of the sales over the Spring. In addition to a sale topper, Dapple Wavertree 2004 sold five two-year-olds which were each in the top 10% of their respective sales. This pinhook program will repeat each year.
